Hope this helps clarify things:
One way of getting round the cylinder 1024 issue is to create a (say 10mb) /boot
partition. This partition just contains the files used during boot-up: boot
kernel images (such as vmlinuz-2.12-20) and System.map and so on. Of course
install takes care of this for you if you name the partion's mount point as
/boot and specifiy that that is the boot partition.
Then the next partition can be / and can be as large as you like.
/
aka "the root directory" is of course what you want. Not to be confused with
/root
which is just the home directory of the user "root," contains root's personal
and config filesand need not be on a separate partition
For purposes of speed, the /swap partition should be the first partition on your
disc, but if you have cylinder 1024 problems, only do this if you can fit both
the swap partition (however big you have decided it should be (hint : twice your
RAM) and the partition on which the kernel boot image resides _both_ fit below
cylinder 1024.

I dunno. I've never installed the /boot directory on a partition other
than root.
