No I dont think you're totally off base! I dont know enough to say. I think the
tip was from the (performance tuning howto ? or the) configuration howto...

Great explaination of /boot, Paul, but I have to
contest this little bit.  Putting swap in the center
may well be the best spot for it, but on a very busy
drive, it might actually be better off in a central
band.  Bear in mind that most of the time on a
system that is hitting the swap hard, the head will
already be busy reading data elsewhere, not simply
resting in the center.

If I'm totally off-base here, let me know, but I thought
that is the convential wisdom.
