Not sure about 2.2.14, but with 2.2.12 there was a fairly common problem
with printing on i386 machines owing to a few "issues" with parport.o. Put
some stuff in the print queue and then type "lpq" if it says something
along the lines of "the printer is offline" or "the printer is
disconnected" (sorry, can't remember the actual error message, basically
anything other than "no entries" or "the printer is online and printing" it
its first line of output) then this may be your problem as well. While
there is probably a very clever solution which involves buggering around
with modules, in my case I figured that my print server never did anything
with its parallel ports but print, so the following solution was ideal:
make menuconfig (or xconfig if you GUI)
under "General setup" say Y (not m) to "Parallel port support" and right
below it "PC-style hardware"
under "Plug and Play support" say N to "Auto-probe for parallel devices"
exit and save
make dep clean bzImage modules modules_install
tell lilo (or whatever) about your new kernel and reboot.
