the "tar" application / command can be used to create tape archives of
directories/files/partitions. You can run it from "crond" which means you can
set up the system to do back-ups at times you specify. Tape archiving, whether
via parallel port, IDE or SCSI interfaces is a pretty standard and long-standing
part of the kernel. Although I know nothing about it, I know regular tape
archiving has been around for a long time...
Maybe you can do a search or check the Hardware HOWTO...
