Art,

My Dell Inspiron has this chip.  The newest version of XFree86 (3.3.6) 
supports the chip.  The only distribution (as of last weekend) that I could 
find with this in an RPM was Mandrake 7.0.

I was able to get things working using the new version of x and  running a 
kernel with framebuffer support (and support turned on in lilo).

I would suggest you take a look 
at:  http://www.eecs.umich.edu/~steveh/inspiron/.  It helped me.  It's 
mainly directed at the Dell Inspiron but you can probably find some info 
that would help you there.
