cant even boot

here it is quick and to the point

i have 2 scenarios

1.
new drive (4.3 gig with ezdrive)
not formated
red hat dist
boot disk doesnt work
cdrom doesnt boot.

2.
old drive (2gb) with old win98 on it
formatted over it
installed linux with correct partitions
end it said server error 11, then said ok to reboot.
rebooted
system commander looks for command.com instead of linux
well win is gone
fdisk is gone and i can only boot from a win floppy
..sounds to me like mbr didnt get written over
but dont have fdsik to format it.
..none of the rh boot disk/cdroms work

..please tell me its something stupid please!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
