1.  Have you tried sndconfig?  I think you need to run it on a text
console.  If in X, do <Ctrl><Alt><F1> to get a text console.  Log in as
root.  Run "sndconfig".  It should identify the card, build new
configuration files, set up the card, and play a sound sample and a midi
sample.  When done, type "exit" or <Ctrl>D, then <Alt><F7> to get back
to the GUI.

2.  You might need to enable PNP to make the above work.
