misterious (newbie) problem

hi all,...

i've installed RH 5.2 on i486 8MB RAM. yesterday, i couldn't login to my
computer. i entered my login name and password, then it showed 
"login : " again (as if i press ctr + d after i loged in) When i tried to
login as root to figure out what happened, the computer was hang, like
this 
login : root
password :
-

any suggestion?
