trackpad doesn't work right; keyboard locks

Hi all:

I'm a newbie but have now spent several days immersing myself in RH 6.2
trying to get things to work right. There are several problems but the first
is that the trackpad doesn't work right on my Compaq laptop-the pointer
jumps around and drop-down menus mysteriously appear. I have discovered a
few updated packages to download from the laptops How-to, but don't really
know how to install them. And I don't know if I'm supposed to remove the
existing gpm first.

The touchpad problem wouldn't be too bad except that at some point the
keyboard locks entirely. The mouse pointer still moves but clicking on
something has no effect. At that point I have to turn off the computer and
reboot.

There are other problems (Zip drive, APM, and I haven't even tried the modem
yet...) but this is the most pressing.
