Compaq Deskpro Installation Trubs

Has anyone come across the following during install of 6.2 on a Compaq
Deskpro?

Basic host info is set in linuxconf, to include default gateway.
However, when netstat -r is requested, no default shows up.

NIC is Etherlink III 3C509B-TPO and PnP disabled.  Diagnostic from 3Com
shows cards as good.

I have not run across this before.  I know it must be proprietary with
Compaq as Gateway machines installed with same NIC are up and running.
Default gateway shows when netstat -r typed.

Any help would be appreciated.
