Presuming you are referring to network cards at all, they would
ideally be of the same kind. (RJ-45? 10/100baseT?)

Depends on the specifics. Maybe you can hook them up with a
crossover cable, maybe you'll need a hub, maybe you're SOL.
Although at worst, you could probably buy a card and get it
to work.
