Maybe you compiled a custom kernel before, and made ide-cd as a module? In
that case you should check your conf.modules, to see if it is still being
loaded. Possibly kudzu removed it. Don't run kudzu at every boot. Just enable
it when you remove or add hardware.
Anyway, does the CDROM reappear when you remove the tape drive (and run
kudzu)?
