I had a similar experience. I don't know anything about this particular
model of laptop. However, most of the laptops that I have worked with have
a function key combination to switch displays from LCD to External. Have
you tried this? Additionally, have you might check your XF86Config file as
it may be trying a resolution that your LCD screen can not handle by default
and thus switching to the external display. The output from the X startup
may also be of assistance in locating your problem. This output can be
redirected to a text file via the following command
startx > /tmp/x.out 2>&1

We evaluated some Asus laptops that used this (SMI) chipset, but the only
operational X server we found was XF86_FBDev (Frame Buffer Device). It's

hard to set up, but it's painfully slow.
