Thanks for the advice Jon.
I tried it but unfortunatley I had no joy. agpgart was there and looked the
same apart from the permissions. The alias wasn't in my conf.modules (I
don't have a modules.conf) so I added it but it didn't seem to help much.
Any other suggestions?

Sounds like there was a problem with the agpgart module. Make sure that
you have an agpgart device in /dev that looks a bit like:
crw-r--r-- 1 root root 10, 175 Jun 5 16:04 /dev/agpgart
If you don't have it (I'm quite certain you do), make it like so:
# mknod /dev/agpgart c 10 175
Then, look in /etc/modules.conf for a line a bit like:
alias char-major-10-175 agpgart
If you don't have one of those, add it at the bottom or something and do
`depmod -a' afterwards. This should keep it from happening in the
future.
