3c905-tx not responding

I've got a 3com 3c905-tx installed as eth1 (along with a de500 as eth0).  
I've configured the nic using the 3com utility after booting to dos.  It's 
set for 10mbps/full duplex but I think I need the same paramaters in linux.

In linux the code is  in conf.modules to bring up both interfaces and this 
works correctly.
BUT im using PACBELL DSL over PPPOE.  The DSL modem is 10/full as evidenced 
by my Win98 machine.  The 3c905 doesn't want to talk to the DSL modem.  The 
DE500 works fine.  I tried adding "speed=10mbps duplex=2" to the options 
line in conf.modules for eth1 but then the interface wouldn't come up at 
all.

Any help would be appreciated.
