As a newbye, I installed RedHat 6.2 with kernel 2.2.14-5 on my laptop. Then,
downloaded from ftp.RedHat.com the kernel new release 2.2.16-3 rpm file, I
issued the command:
rpm -Uvh kernel-2.2.16-3.i586.rpm.Rebooting and issuing the command uname -a
I see the new version.
So far so good!
Then I had a go at customizing the kernel for my laptop hardware (30MB
RAM,almost entirely busy with the kernel according to the "free" command)
and networking necessity following the instruction found in RedHat
documentation:
under the directory /usr/src/linux I issued the various:
make mrproper
make menuconfig
make dep
make clean
Then, always under /usr/src/linux I modified the makefile line
EXTRAVERSION=14-5 (why the last part of the previous version??) into
EXTRAVERSION=16-3vic (after my name :)). Then again
make bzImage modules modules_install.Finally I copied bzImage to
/boot/vmlinux-2.2.16-5vic and
modified the lilo.conf file adding this new kernel with the name linuxvic.
Rebooting and choosing linuxvic I got the following messages:
............................................................
Jul 30 17:23:57 linuxdem rc.sysinit: Remounting root filesystem in
read-write mode succeeded
Jul 30 17:23:57 linuxdem depmod: depmod: Can't open
/lib/modules/2.2.14.16-3vic/modules.dep for writing
............................................................
Jul 30 17:24:18 linuxdem crond: crond startup succeeded
Jul 30 17:24:18 linuxdem pcmcia: Starting PCMCIA services:
Jul 30 17:24:19 linuxdem pcmcia: module directory
/lib/modules/2.2.14.16-3vic/pcmcia not found.
...........................................................
Obviously I cannot use any service the module option (ppp for instance) is
involved with!
Besides, it looks as though the source used to generate the modified kernel
was that of the previous 14 version rather than the new 16.
What went wrong? Suggestion to fix it will be highly appreciated.
Ciao
Vittorio
