I'm a newbie too, and had similar "problems" even though there was nothing
wrong... The tape does not have to be mounted, it is just used. Also,
depending on your device, the tape rewinds itself each time you create a new
archive. (I think...)
Try a test...
Make a directory and put a file into it. Now, in the same directory as the
single file you just created, type this command...
tar -cvf /dev/st0 *
Your tape should start up and you should have copied whatever is in the
directory (ie the newly created file). The results should be displayed to
your screen.
If it still gives you an error, check that your tape in not write protected.
