 Of course rebooting is somewhat rigorous if your X Window doesn't work. First 
try Ctrl-Alt-BkSpc to kill the X server. It might be respawning though. Next 
try Ctrl-Alt-F1. If this doesn't get you out of X, your final option is to 
reboot.
