Having never done this I would have to guess that the best method should
been
1.) Leave a direct console root login connected.
2.) backup new passwd files.
3.) Import only passwd file, test if a login works
4.) run pwconv from shadow-utiles
5.) retest.
Possible likely causes is that checksums didnt match. Or did you really
import all the files like passwd and passwd- and shadow- ?
