problem with fuzzy text / errors in RH6.2 printfiter

Hi there. :)

Up until recently I had been printing fine with gs 5.1 and redhat 6.0. I've
been curious about color printing quality on my Canon BJC for some time
(the color is way too dark) but at this point, that's a separate issue. But,
that explains at least partially why I wanted to upgrade to a newer
version of ghostscript and printfilters.

Anyhow, I upgraded a while back to gs-5.50, but ever since then, I've
had a problem with the output -- the pixels are way spread out, and this
makes the text *very* fuzzy. In the interest of trying to fix this, I've
been playing with the 6.2 printtool as well as gs 5.50 in an effort to
try and fix things.

Here's what I've done so far -- I've looked at various printer compatibility
long time) and what I've found is that the 6.2 print filters don't work
well on my machine.

For instance, I can choose a few different printers -- what I've found
(so far) is that with variations of 'bj200' I get output, but that output
is still fuzzy. If I use bjc610, I get errors from gs printed on the page,
featuring /invalidfileaccess something or other, but I can't tell what it's
attempting to access. Maybe that's a permissions issue somewhere?

Raw 'gs' works fine. For instance if I type:

gs -sDEVICE=uniprint @bjc610a1.upp -r360x360 -sOutputFile=/dev/lp0 somefile.ps
I get OK black and white output. Ultimately, I want to be able to print
color (this has worked before, but not very well). The bj200 driver, in
particular, won't give me color.

One thing I notice that's strange is the 'NAxNA' resolution in the driver
for bjc610 (from printtool). This seems strange. Does this get passed to
gs as is? If so, that might be something, but I've experimenting with
altering the postscript.cfg file in /var/spool/lpd/lp without success.

I'm tairing my remaining hair out on this one. I'd like to tweak the
stuff that gets passed to gs and see if that can clear things up. In
particular, there's mention of 'gamma.ps' which is supposed to do some
gamma correction -- that might finally get my printer to print neat
color :).

Help appreciated -- if you have a BJC250 printer I'd like to correspond with
you -- especially if you are running redhat 6.2. Thanks.
