Are you talking about putting the command $ ifconfig or $ ifconfig in to the
/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth1 file?

then $ ifconfig

if its up then ( Redhat ) [ but you get the gist ] more /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth1
