Worked great with DHCP server

I did a RH 6.2 server install, configured to receive it's IP address from a
DHCP server. It worked great. Then I changed to a static IP address and I
can't reach the network. When I ping my own IP address it returns one ping
normally, the next ping comes after 316000ms or so.
I have changed static IP addresses many times on RHL without a problem so
this must have something to do with choosing DHCP server when I did the
install I assume.
I have checked chkconfig, processes etc but I'm stumped on this one and
would really appreciate any pointers to what could be wrong.
TIA,
