Hello, I am new to Linux and was attempting to install RedHat 6.2 on a
Windows 98 machine using the partitionless option. I had two issues:
1. The GUI installer would not load - after entering in country and
language, the installation just died.
2. I attempted to install using the text installation, and received the
following error:
'No valid devices were found on which to create new file systems. Please
check your hardware for the cause of this problem.'
The machine has ~15Gb of free space and has had no issues under 98. I
defragmented the harddrive and ran scandisk as precautionary measures, but
still nothing. Again, it doesn't even get to the point of attempting the
installation. It give the error immediately after I choose the type of
installation(i.e. workstation, server, or custom) and does it for both
workstation options. I also tried to install both 6.2 and 6.0 to see if
there was any issue there, but again the same problem occurred.
A friend suggested that I make sure to check the bios for LBA on the hard
drives. It was not originally set, but I changed that and still had the
same issue. Also, the hard drive was a single windows 98 partition, I
created a 5Gb partition using fips, but this also had no affect. It was
also suggested that this could be the results of having an ATA 66 IDE
Controller. How do I tell if I have this and is there anything that I can
do to get Linux to recognize the hard drive?
Thanks in advance.
