Will it not boot from the CD either?

How did you get to the crash in the installer?

What version are you installing?

I'd do the install in text mode, and skip the
X configuration step. Then get the latest XFree86
packages, install them and configure X from
the running system.

I've heard of some systems not booting from the
floppy correctly, but don't know much about them.
I've haven't done an install on my system for ~1.5
years. I just update to the newer packages.
