Sound in KDE

I'm sure this is a frequent post but I'm not having complete success
configuring sound in KDE. I'm running RedHat 6.0 and have sound working
in GNOME. Under the suggestion of the FAQ's at www.kde.org, I added a
line to my 'startkde' script. The line I added was 'kwmsound'. I
received a message that it failed and I should try starting kaudioserver
manually. I took this suggestion and was able to hear sounds when I
went into the sound configuration portion of the KDE Control Center. I
took the time to set up several sounds for various events and was able
to hear them when I pushed the test button. When finished this process,
I tried some of the events that I'd just configured sound for and didn't
hear anything. What am I overlooking?
I'm just new to KDE but not to RH6.0 and GNOME. I'm obviously missing
something in my initialization of KDE.
Regards,
Art Ross
