I don't know how the port replicator thingie works, but it should be
something like a PCI/ISA connected thingie, not?
Normally, there is no problem in configuring nics dynamically under
redhat, i even think there is a (redhat specific) graphical tool called
netconfig for managing these things.
Question left now is: What sort of connection to the laptop is used? A
normal, pc-stock-technology bus like PCI or such, or some proprietary
things that Dell should consider making at least some kernel modules
available for?
My guess is that the ethernet part of the port replicator is nothing
self implemented but just the chip included...
