The whole of the partitiion that contains the /boot directory must reside below
cylinder 1024. If you have a dedicated /boot partition this will not present a
problem; it is rare that anyone, other than perhaps a kernel hacker, would need
a /boot directory of more than 10 MB.
If your /boot directory is not in a separate partition then it will
automatically be contained in the partition that contains / (ie the root
partition). That might present problems if your root partition is large, so just
make a dedicated /boot partition.
If you have windows and loads of windows apps, the best way is to have a small
first partition containing c:\windows and maybe some other stuff. Allow, say,
700MB for this (if you use the free Ranish Partition Manager you can see what
cylinder a partition would end at if you changed its size, and you can do this
without actually making any changes. You can then go and use FIPS.) Right after
that, have your /boot partition (say 10mb). Then you can use the rest of your
disc(s) any way you like.
Given the low price of hard discs now, it's a good idea just to buy a new hard
disc, but not everyone wants to do that... Anyway the point is that you dont
need to.

Does the whole partition have to reside before the 1024 cylinder limit or just
the beggining of the partition ? Does anyone know ?
