MEMORY UPGRADE

I recently added more memory to my Compaq 486 33/m from 16 to 48m. I then 
appended the  etc/lilo.conf file with the  append="mem=48m" line yet the 
system still does not recognize the 48m. what did I overlook to get the 
system to reconfigure the megs
