A different PPP problem

I am having a problem with PPP, but not like your's. I can hear the modem 
making a connect with my ISP, but it won't do anything else. I can't tell if 
it is getting past the user verification stage or not. After about a minute, 
I hear the modem dialing out again and connecting again. I don't know 
anything about Linux yet and am trying to learn as I go. Any help is very 
muchly appreciated.
