HP Omnibook XE2 Display

I recently approach HP Technical support for the specs on the screen refresh
rates and the clock rates of the video adapter for the HP notebook PC. They
told me that there is no such info on the notebook display (unlike desktop
PC)
:-(
attached below are their reply . SiliconMotion does not provide support to
end-users and re-direct us to the manufacturer (ie. HP). As I am not a guru
in this area, is it true that on the notebook LCD display (unlike desktop
PC), there is no need to know the vert and horz refresh rates to configure
the XF86Config? Is it true that notebook vendors do not provide info on the
LCD refresh rates and their supported clockrates of their video chipset?
Other than using a sledgehammer on the HP Omnibook, how could I configure it
to display 1024x768x256colors on my HP Omnibook XE2. So far I was only able
to configure it to run 320x200x16; and could not even configure it to do
panning on virtual window even with a 4MB Video RAM. With the 320x200
resolution, it is almost impossible for me to navigate on the X-Window.
Attached "svgaerr.txt" file is the error message I get while running xinit
or startx.
Thanks
Wayne

Wayne,
Once again the refresh values you are looking for are not available because
the
OS we do support do not need these values. If you wish to contact Silicon
Motion on your own, you are more than welcome to...but we cannot be
involved.
Again, we do not support LINUX.

Wayne,
As mentioned in our previous message to you, we do not support the XE2 on a
Linux supported OS. The XE2 uses a SMI Lynx EM4 Graphic Controller. For
more
information on the specs of the XE2, please visite the following website:
http://www.hp.com/omnibook/products/xe2/index.htm
Video chipsets that you are used to in the desktop world do not exist on
notebooks. Typically notebooks have a one chip integrated solution for
video,
so it is not separate chips like you are used to on the desktop.
Once again the refresh values you are looking for are not available because
the
OS we do support do not need these values.

I would appreciate if you could provide me with a detail specs of the XGA
TFT
LCD display and the video chipset as follows:
1. Table of horizontal and vertical refresh rate (Hz) of the LCD display and
the
video adapter.
2. Support contact from Silicon Motion.
3. How could I configure the Xconfig file of the Linux (Redhat) for it to
display 1024x768 at least 256colors.
Thanks
