Multiple IDE controllers

I'm running 6.1 on a Tyan Dual PII motherboard; with a built-in IDE
controller.  I've got 4 IDE devices right now (2 disks, CDROM, tape), and
would like to add another couple of drives. When I tried adding a second
"dumb" PCI/IDE controller (I think it was SMC), the BIOS would not recognize
the second controller; and neither would Linux.

Has anyone had any experience with multiple IDE controllers?  What controllers
are recommended (or not)?  Any other "gotchas" I should be looking for?
