Re: "UNIX In Plain English" by Kevin Richard & Eric F. Johnson, MIS Press. (Reading List HOWTO)

Let's not start a flame war, but you could make the same argument about burning
CDs of linux distributions (instead of buying official distributions) cheating
its authors out of their share options. I presume the author chose to make this
available on line, so be it. My opinion on this (for what its worth) is that
very few people would print out the book and bind it up - it's so much easier to
get a nicely-sized bound book - especially given that it's dozens of HTML files
and not just one pdf file. Making the book available on line is not likely to
reduce sales - if you browse it and print it and like it then you will perhaps
buy it - it's a little bit like shareware.

However, I am lucky to have access to decent printing and binding machines so I
can take advantage of these free books : - )

If you're tight like me there are loads of freebie books available (such as:

Gimp Manual
Grokking the Gimp
Whos afraid of C++
Samba book
Debian book
Python documentation
PHP documentation
Perl documentation
HTML / XML etc documentation
LDP guides and HOWTOs
...
...)
and long live it!!
Not to mention Project Gutenberg etc.
Any other cheapos like me check out softparanoia and oswg.org (which you should
check out anyway if you are into Open Source), oh, and, please, email me URLs of
other good free Linux-related books!!

Actually, I have the same book in hard cover. It is very informative as a
reference book for what does what in UNIX, but the same information is
available on the net if you search for it -- and why not buy the book? It
is only $14.95 or less and it is intellectual property. By passing it
around the author is cheated out of his commission on sales, which he
aptly deserves for writing it.
