need more open files

Does anyone know how too increase the number of open files?

I keep getting this error message--

system(23)

when my TCL program tries to open its 201st file.  It needs to open 2000
files.  I scanned through the "make config" log for my RedHat 6.2
vmlinuz-2.2.5-15 and didn't see any options for increasing this limit.
