I haven't installed 6.2 in my computer as of yet, but I am wondering if you
added
Alias parport_lowlevel parport_pc
to your /etc/conf.modules file.
This was a problem with the 6.1 version, which I imagine has now been
fixed - but who knows, it may have been overlooked. Those kind of things do
happen to even the best. Of course, if you got it working under 6.1, then I
suppose that you have looked into that.

I did try that before posting, both with the "test" menu on printtool
and at the command line. No activity occurs.
To further rule out hardware troubles, I've installed a skeleton
install of win/98 on the same machine, to see if the epson900 would
work in its native habitat. It did work immediately. That should
rule out cable, and printer itself.
I'm a little lost as to what to do next to diagnose this problem.
