mv /lib/modules2.2.12-20smp /lib/modules/2.2.12-20smp.old
make mrproper
make xconfig
make dep
make clean
make bzImage

I leave the old kernel alone.
make modules
make modules_install
cp /usr/src/linux/arch/i386/boot/bzImage /boot/mick
edit lilo and add new image 'mick'
run /sbin/lilo
it should add both 'Linux' and 'mick', and on minw Win98 as 'w'
This way at boot you can select the old kernel in case you built a bad one.

ps you 'mv' ed your modules to 'old'. So thats why you can't find them.
