Can't telnet to fresh install

I've got a fresh copy of redhat 6.2 that won't let me connect with a telnet
client...

Everything looks alright as far as the settings go but when I try to connect
to it all I get is a blank screen.  The client thinks its connected but I
never see the login prompt.

When I restart the inetd process I get the following in /var/log/messages

ttloop: peer died: EOF


Any ideas?
