I always choose IRQs of 9, 10, 11 or 12, depending on what other hardware uses those IRQs. The base address of 220 is the same as MIDI or sound, as is the IRQ of 5 typically, so, choose a base address of 300 and one of the other IRQs.
That should solve the hanging, unless you select an IRQ or base address that is already used.

A little update on my problems..
I made a DOS boot disk and ran SoftSet2 on the card. It set the IRQ to 5 and base i/o to 220 and it all tested okay. I went back into Linux and put those setting in with LinuxConf, and it still hangs every time it tried to boot up. Gets as far as initializing eth0 and then just freezes up.
Any other ideas anyone?
Jordan.
