Well, i just find a way to join win2K workstation to 2.07 samba domain :

a)  configure TNG 2.6 server and start all the daemons (domain TEST)
b) add user root (old style smbpasswd -a root )
c) add w2k workstation (smbpasswd -a -m WIN2K$)
d) join the domain  TEST with win2K workstation  (login root, password
mypassword) ...welcome to TEST...
e) restart workstation
f) kill all the daemons
g) save TEST.SID and smbpasswd
h) install 2.07
i) cp TEST.SID MACHINE.SID
j) samba start
k) enjoy win2K domain logon !!!

now the problems :

i want to add another win2K workstation : I  start again TNG, but it is
unable to reuse old SIDs : looks like all the smbpasswd database needs
to be reconstructed.... where is my mistake ?

This is not quit correct - Samba works with Windows 2000 and RH 6.xx and RH
7
You will not be able to use Samba as they DC - but normal file serving and
printing works fine.
I have 50 Windows 2000 users accessing shares on RH box.

My understanding is that Microsoft changed the APIs in Windows 2000,
rendering SAMBA incapable of connecting. This would make total sense if
SAMBA in RH6.X and RH7.0 were now disabled.

Leave it to Microsoft to change the standards without sharing its APIs.
So much for their commitment to "interoperability".  At Microsoft the word
"interoperability" means "migrate to Windows".
