During the install, it asks which filesystems to format.
If you don't format /home then the old data will remain.
Same for /backup. If you don't format the filesystem
but the new install changes config files already there,
the old versions should be saved. This saves files that
so you can reapply the changes after updates.
you get names like *.rpmold, *.rpmorig, and *.rpmnew
