The reason is that one of your folders has been specified as a remote
host, and pine is trying to make a IMAP connection to it, ie a inbox path 
like  {monet.art.nowhere.edu}INBOX , will cause pine to atemp a IMAP
connection to the host.

So please go to the Setup->Config and check and see wether the inbox-path
is set to a value like that. There realy should be no value set for it,
then PINE will simply read you /var/spool/username mail account.

Pine really does not need to contact a IMAP server unless you have
configured it to do so, so if you dont want to fetch your mail from a IMAP
erver then simply disable the setting in pines configuration. 

However if you wish to use the IMAP server on your local machine

Please enable the line like 
imap    stream  tcp     nowait  root    /usr/sbin/tcpd  imapd

in inetd conf.

and add or uncomment the 
imap3           220/tcp                         # Interactive Mail Access
imap3           220/udp                         # Protocol v3

lines in /etc/services.

The imap port is 220.
