Just tried the same thing on my RH 6.2 laptop.  Does exactly the same thing.
I would say that this is what the designers intended.  I am running XFree
4.0.1 and Helix Gnome, if that makes any difference to anyone.

In Gnome + Sawfish, if I maximized a window, I won't be able to resize
it by drag the border of it.

Has anyone seen this behavior before?
