Actually it is the development 2.4 kernels which support DMA thoroughly.

But the 2.2 kernels support it too.
Running
 
/sbin/hdparm -c1 -d1 -k1 /dev/hda  

Should enable 32 bit mode and turn on UDMA support. 
It works for my Fireball Hard disk, please tell me how you find it.
