I've tried some more things and have found out the following...
1. the errors only occur on the IBM Thinkpad 600e.
2. the error message states that I have "a badly punctuated parameter list
in #define". This is at line 231 and 237 of .../lib/checksum.S. The
error is consistent.
3. the error does not occur on my Dell 400Mhz system. Both were fresh
installs from exactly the same media and are running the same kernel
config file.
4. I've checked the checksum.S file and the #define command at lines 231
and 237 look exactly the same on both systems...and look just fine.
5. I have been running "make dep clean modules modules_install
bzImage" and the failure only occurs on bzImage.
This is really weird!!! I have absolutely no idea why I can't run bzImage
on the laptop
