So you are not mounting the CD? Good. Then this I/O error must be caused by
the fact that the CD player can't read the CD. Some players are more sensitive
than others, and audio players usually have error correction that can't be
used on data players (data players can't just skip sectors, audio players can
to a certain extend).

Set your bios to boot from CDrom. Insert your installation CD ;). Type linux
rescue at the boot prompt. A rescue system is now booted from CD.
