Well, you can run XF86Setup, and try selecting your video card driver,
then you can test the resolution, and also set the default screen(s).

All of this can be done from the XF86Setup program, once you have selected
your card, and monitor, in the modeselection box, click the resolutions
and color depths that you wish to use, for ex I have clicked 640*480 and
800 * 600 on, and with 16 bit color depth, that way when I amrunning X I
can switch resolutions iwth the "CTRl ALT +" and "CTRL ALT -" key
combos. all the keys held down at the same time of course ;)

If you want to do some fine tuning you can use the xvidtune program, but
please be sure that your monitor is a new one, ie some old ones can burn
out...:(
