Kernel too large

When I try to compile my kernel, I get an error message stating that it is
too large. I thought it would be small, since I picked only minimal options
including support for a Travan floppy tape drive and TCP/IP networking. After
getting the error message, I ran make bzImage and it worked, but is this method
undesirable? Are there disadvantages to using bzImage instead of zImage?
