This, of course, is just my opinion on the matter, but I don't think that
anyone was bashing anyone here. To me the statement regarding the use of
the www.linuxdoc.org site was nothing more than a friendly reminder. Why
automatically assume the worst? Yes the docs can be cryptic, and so can
some of the error messages. So, if you find one that is cryptic and you
don't like it, I say fix it. Either update the code yourself (if you're
familiar with the coding language) and send it to the author/maintainer or
(if not familiar with the coding language) at lease send some suggestions to
the maintainer regarding what you found to be cryptic and how you think it
could be improved. This is in essence the theory behind Linux, is it not?

You are absolutely correct! IMHO Linux/Unix is a great operating system,
but the initial learning curve is a bit steep, but once the initial bit is
mastered the rest is very easy. So I personally think that when a newbie
makes a request for some basic info, it is kinder taking the time and
replying to them rather than asking them to RTFM (read those fragmented
manuals).
The Linux DOC's are good, but for a newbie user it is very hard to figure
out what to do with them.
For example one common question on many forums is that "after installing
linux, netscape says can't connect to host interic.net etc etc", well the
problem is easily solved by telling the newbie to add the nameserver of
his ISP to the /etc/resolv.conf file. But how on earth is the newbie able
to figure out from the cryptic error messages that he has to add a
nameserver and how to do so if he was told to RTFM instead.
Also some of the newbies of today are the gurus of tomorrow..So it is
worth helping them..:)

No problem...just keep posting......there are a lot of friendly people on
this list who would be glad to help anyone...besides the free sharing of
software and knowledge and readiness to help is what makes the UNIX
community standout from others
Best Wishes,
Grendel
