Subject: Re: SCSI Problem!! (Please Help!)
Hello,
I too am having problems with the Red Hat 6.1 or 6.2 when I try to
install it on my scsi-only computer. The adapter is an Adaptec 2940UW with
2 Seagate ST32155W SCSI drives. The install program either asks for an
additional driver disk or, if I cancel that request, the install gets into a
endless loop with the displayed message "Loading aic7xxx driver .........".
Same old 'Trying Harder' message when you look at the 'system-related
message' screen, CTRL-ALT-F3.
Thus far I have had no luck with RedHat support. They seem to be
non-knowledgable about SCSI devices. The answers I've received from them
suggest altogether different approaches and they often conflict with other
advice they give. I simply do not think they (RedHat Support) really know
what is going on.
Either 6.1 or 6.2 runs fine on my old 486-50 machine (IDE drives) and
Win98 worked fine on the SCSI machine but the RedHat install program simply
hangs in the aic7xxx loop on this machine. If I had the source code for
RedHat's install program I would be able to do something about it but, of
course, the RedHat install program is not open source.
In closing I suspect we are on our own here. Either we abandon using
SCSI adapters and drives and use IDE's or we don't try to install RedHat on
these machines. Of course we can try to hack our way through but that seems
inconsistent with the statement that RedHat supports the Adaptec 2940UW
adapter.
If I ever come up with a solution I will post it on this group board.
Good Luck
