First... what do you mean by "(mostly) redhat-6.0"?? what have you
changed.
second: what did you change? This is not something that arbitrarily
happens. If this was happening on an outbound channel, such as pinging
an outside webserver, then I would suspect traffic, bad cables, bad NIC,
bad subnet masq, etc. BUT, since you can not even ping localhost,
(which should be pointed to 127.0.0.1 in /etc/hosts) something is way
wrong. Have you changed any network settings at all? Have you added or
deleted any files at all. have you changed the system in any way at
all. This usually happens when you mess with
/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/<filename>, or when you go changing
things in netconf, linuxconf, etc. How do you connect anywya? via
ethernet card, or modem?
Now... also, you mentioned a static IP when connected to the net. how
often are you on the net? do a rpm -V on the important files, like
util-linux, etc. the ones that contain the important system files. see
which ones have been changed. there is a likelyhood that you got
cracked.
anyway, those are my thoughts.. not worth much, but a direction to look
towards...
