I subsequently found a modified /bin/login dated from 8/30. I think the
problem surfaced later, but that's at least a start. I don't know whether or 
not openSSL would touch /bin/login. Anyone know for sure?

But I'm reinstalling the util-linux RPM to start with, at least.
